When my beloved dogs Tasha and Niki died in 2002, nothing anyone said or did could console me. Some friends and family members and even a veterinarian or two were thoughtful enough to send condolence cards or flowers. Mostly, as I have learned through speaking with hundreds of other pet guardians over the years, a common thread among those of us who have lost a pet is that our grief is not understood, not comfortable for others, and, worse yet, not acknowledged. True loving support is difficult, if not impossible, to find.

Hospitality or hostess gifts and gift baskets are a wonderful way to say "welcome" and "thank you" to family and friends.  Your gift need not be expensive, but a homemade and heartfelt gift is always appreciated. 

A gift basket doesn't have to be a "basket."  You can use a glossy gift bag, crate, hat box, even a plain cardboard box covered with fabric or gift wrap tailored to your theme.  You are limited only by your imagination and budget! Embellish your container of choice with tissue paper, shred, tulle and/or ribbon featuring your selected colors to match your gift items.  Next, fill your "basket" with a mix of some of the following selections.  Include gourmet foods and candies, or brainstorm for your own ideas.
